Activity Description: The Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) Deaf-Blind Intervener Modules are designed to increase awareness, knowledge and skills related to intervention for individuals with deaf-blindness in an educational setting. Through this course, participants will develop an understanding of the definition of deaf-blindness, the impact of combined vision and hearing loss on a person’s experience, the role of the intervener, and strategies to apply when working with people with deaf-blindness.

Activity Goals

●   Understand the diversity of the deaf-blind population, including common etiologies

●   Identify examples of supports and resources on deaf-blindness that are available for families, educators, and other service providers.

●   Recognize that deaf-blindness is a disability of access to information that requires knowledge and implementation of specific strategies to support learning.

●   Understand the role of each of the seven senses and the impact on interactions and experiences.

●   Understand and explain the role of the intervener.

●   Describe key instructional principles and strategies that are effective in educating and interacting with learners with deaf-blindness.

Participation Details:

●     Target audience: Community and Educational Interpreters, prospective interveners

●     Satisfactory completion will earn the student 3.0 Professional Studies CEU's (content knowledge level "little/no")

●     Required activity: Guided by the staff of the Virginia Project for Children and Young Adults with Deaf-Blindness, students will complete four specific modules from the Open Hands, Open Access intervener training materials; students will complete module content along with accompanying quizzes and reflection activities (to be provided by the Project) totaling 27 study hours; student will complete a total of (3) 1hr video meetings with Project staff, for a total of 30 hours of participation

No partial CEU credit will be awarded

Expected time to completion: 8 weeks

Open only to Virginia residents who are members of VRID
