Workshop Information: 

Participants will discuss two topics in the course of this workshop.  In the morning, we will explore the importance of processing time and discuss strategies for increasing and trusting your working memory during the interpreting process.  During the second half of the workshop we will analyze the use of space in ASL and strategies for understanding it and enhancing its’ use in your own sign production.

Presenter Biography: Paula Debes, CI, CT

Paula Debes is originally from New York City and she started her teaching career at the Lexington School for the Deaf.  She has also taught science to Deaf students at The Learning Center and at Woodson HS.  She currently is the Assistant Dean for the ASL and Interpreter Education Department at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale campus and has taught there since 2004.  She holds a MA degree in Deaf Education from McDaniel’s College and an M. Ed in Higher Education with a specialization in teaching Interpreting from Northeastern University.    In addition, she maintains her CI/CT certification from the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf and Professional Level Certification from the American Sign Language Teacher’s Association.
