 Virginia Registry of
Interpreters for the Deaf
Assessments

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certification / National Association of the Deaf: Individuals achieving certification at the NIC, NIC Advanced or NIC Master level are all professionally certified interpreters. The National Interpreter Certification (NIC) exam tests interpreting skills and knowledge in three critical domains:
  1. General knowledge of the field of interpreting through the NIC Knowledge exam
  2. Ethical decision making through the interview portion of the NIC Performance test
  3. Interpreting and transliterating skills through the performance portion of the test.

In all three domains, certificate holders must demonstrate professional knowledge and skills that meet or exceed the minimum professional standards necessary to perform in a broad range of interpretation and transliteration assignments.

Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS):
The VQAS is administered by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) in accordance with "Regulations Governing Interpreter Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing". This assessment process is designed to assist you, as a developing professional, to identify your strengths and weaknesses in your knowledge and skills of interpreting in order to assist your growth in interpreting competence.  The Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides a document exploring the VQAS and educational interpreters (download PDF).

Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA):
The EIPA is a tool designed to evaluate the voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting skills of interpreters who work in the elementary and secondary school classroom setting.  As of the fall 2006, RID began to recognize individuals who passed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) written and performance tests at the level of 4.0 or higher as certified members of the association. For more information, see RID's website.
